Abstract

A novel electrophotographic photoreceptor is provided comprising on an electrically conductive support a layer containing a charge-transporting compound and a charge-generating compound or a charge-transporting compound-containing layer and a charge-generating compound-containing layer, characterized in that as said electric charge-generating compound there is contained an azo compound containing an organic residue represented by general formula (1): ##STR1## wherein Ar.sup.2 represents a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon or aromatic heterocyclic group; Ar.sup.3 represents an aromatic hydrocarbon group or aromatic heterocyclic group; and Q represents a hydrogen atom, halogen atom, alkyl group, trifluoromethyl group, nitro group, cyano group or alkoxy group. In a preferred embodiment, the azo compound is represented by the general formula (2): ##STR2## wherein Ar.sup.1 represents an aromatic hydrocarbon group or aromatic heterocyclic group which may be connected thereto via a connecting group; Ar.sup.2 and Ar.sup.3 are as defined in the general formula (1); and n represents an integer 1 to 4.
