Abstract
A coated object comprising a glass substrate and an organomineral film, such an an organosilicon compound, deposited upon at least a portion of the glass substrate wherein the coating is of a sufficient thickness and has a sufficient refractive index so as not to absorb energy within the visible spectrum. The object may additionally comprise at least one coating layer interposed upon the substrate beneath the organomineral film to improve the optical properties of the coated object. A method for making the coated object of the invention is described wherein a plasma deposition process is utilized to deposit the organomineral film upon the surface of the glass or glass-based substrate. Methods are also disclosed for the production of antiglare surfaces upon coated substrates as well as barrier surfaces to prevent the migration of alkaline ions out of the glass substrate and a method to reduce or mitigate the speckling or irridescence effect in a layer formed upon a glass substrate by pyrolytic decomposition of a metal-based powder.
