Abstract
A process for preparing bromonitro-alcohols is disclosed in which bromonitromethane is reacted with a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 aldehyde in aqueous solution at an acid pH, preferably between about 4.0 and about 7.0. An aqueous solution of the aldehyde is prepared and the pH adjusted to the desired acid range by addition of sodium bicarbonate, and the bromonitromethane is added thereto. The bromonitro-alcohol product is isolated as a separate phase from the reaction mixture.
