Abstract

Proliferation activity of methane bacteria in organic waste water can be improved by maintaining the ratio of the amounts of nickel, iron and cobalt contained in the waste water to the BOD thereof to not lower than certain values, and various organic waste waters, such as waste liquor formed during the production of beer and the like, can be treated in a high BOD removal ratio of not lower than 90% while maintaining a high BOD load of not lower than 10 kg/m.sup.3 .multidot.day.
