Abstract

A chiral, stereorigid metallocene compound of the formula I EQU [R.sup.1 R.sup.2 Si(indenyl)2]Y.sup.2 X (I) (me.sup.2 =Ti, Zr or Hf) which is produced as a virtually pure racemate and can be used as a catalyst component for the polymerization of 1-olefins is obtained by reacting a silylindenyl compound of the formula II EQU [R.sup.1 R.sup.2 Si(indenyl).sub.2 ]Me.sub.2.sup.1 (II) (Me.sup.1 =alkali metal) with a titanium, zirconium or hafnium tetrahalide.
