Abstract

Amphiphilic monomers having mixed-chain structures of the general formulae (I) or (II) ##STR1## where Y is --O-- or --NH--, PA1 X is a group of the formula --(CH.sub.2).sub.n -- or --(CH.sub.2 --O--CH.sub.2).sub.n --, PA1 l is an integer from 0 to 10, PA1 m is an integer from 10 to 26, PA1 n is an integer from 1 to 10, PA1 R.sup.1 is hydrogen, methyl, chlorine, cyano, fluorine or bromine, and PA1 R.sup.2 is O-alkyl or NH-alkyl, are polymerized alone or together with other comonomers. The polymers obtained are suitable for preparing ultra-thin films on a suitable base material.
