Site-specific heterobifunctional crosslinkers of the formula: EQU X--COCH(NH.sub.2)--Y--Z where X is a carbonyl reactive group, Y is a variable length spacer, and Z is a thiol reactive group, are useful for the specific labelling of biomolecules or bioaffecting molecules.
