Abstract

A method for preparing stabilized, rehydratable polyacrylamide gels, wherein the stabilizers employed include substituted monosaccharides where the hydroxyl group of the carbon 1 is substituted with a non-charged group comprising an .alpha.-methyl group or an oligosaccharide having from 2 to about 8 repeating units which can be the same or different. These rehydratable gels can be stored for extended periods of time at ambient temperatures, and can be rehydrated without loss of structural or functional integrity to be used for electrophoretic separation of proteins and nucleic acids.
