Abstract

A process for the preparation of a ceramic material comprising PA1 a) reacting at least one organochlorosilane of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 is Cl, H, C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 -alkyl or phenyl, optionally together with at least one organochlorosilane of the formula ##STR2## in which R.sup.2 is Cl, C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 -alkyl, vinyl or phenyl, with ammonia in an inert solvent to form a product of ammonolysis, PA1 b) polymerizing the product of ammonolysis in an inert solvent in the presence of a basic catalyst of the formula EQU R.sup.3 R.sup.4 R.sup.5 R.sup.6 N.sup.+ A.sup.- (III) PA1 in which PA2 R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 each independently is an organic radical containing 1 to 24 carbon atoms, and PA2 A is a basic anion which is capable of causing deprotonation, thereby to form an organic silazane polymer, PA1 c) rendering the catalyst inactive at a temperature above its decomposition temperature, and PA1 d) sintering the silazane polymer.
