Abstract
An ashless detergent additive having antioxidant and metal surface protection properties for lubricants or fuels is made from a Mannich condensation reaction between a hydrocarbylbissuccinimide, such as a dimer of a polyisobutenylsuccinimide (derived from tetraethylenepentamine), an aldehyde, such as formaldehyde, and a heteroatom substituted benzoic acid such as salicylic acid, thiosalicylic acid or aminosalicylic acid.
