Abstract

Disclosed is a flame barrier made of a nonwoven fabric of partially graphitized polyacrylonitrile fibers having a weight per unit area of 40 to 100 g/m.sup.2 and a maximum thhickness of 1.8 mm. The nonwoven fabric is bonded with highly energetic water jets. The flame barrier can be used as a component of a planar multi-layer structure.
