Rubber components of a vulcanizable rubber composition are homogenized by adding to the composition, prior to vulcanization, a phenolic resin formed by reacting a bisphenol A residual resin with chlorinated C.sub.4 to C.sub.8 hydrocarbons in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts alkylation catalyst.
