Abstract

Arylpolyenecarboxylic acids and their derivatives of the formula I ##STR1## where Ar is phenyl, biphenylyl or naphthyl, each of which can be substituted by one to three C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, hydroxyl or phenoxy groups, or amino groups which can be mono- or di-substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl groups, or one methylenedioxy group, it being possible for the substituents to be identical or different, PA1 R.sup.1 is hydrogen, an alkali metal or ammonium cation, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 -alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 -alkenyl, PA1 R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl, PA1 R.sup.3 to R.sup.7 are each hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, and PA1 n is 0 or 1 are used as sunscreen agents in cosmetic preparations.
