Abstract
Novel bleach catalysts, a method for bleaching substrates using these catalysts and detergent compositions containing the catalysts are reported. The catalysts are quaternary imine salts. Substrates such as fabrics may be bleached in an aqueous solution containing these salts and a peroxygen compound. Most preferred as catalyst are the 3,4-dihydroquinolinium salts having the structure: ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.4 may be a substituted or unsubstituted radical selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, aryl, heterocyclic ring, alkyl and cycloalkyl radicals; PA1 R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 may be a substituted or unsubstituted radical selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, aryl, heterocyclic ring, alkyl, cycloalkyl, nitro, halo, cyano, alkoxy, keto, carboxylic and carboalkoxy radicals; and PA1 X.sup.- is a counterion stable in the presence of oxidizing agents.
