Abstract

The water-insoluble dyes of the formula I ##STR1## in which, for example, F is the dye chromophore of C.I. Leuco Sulphur Black 1, PA1 R is hydrogen, alkyl, PA1 M.sup..sym. is a quaternary ammonium cation or phosphonium cation in which the sum of carbon atoms in the hydrophobic radicals present is at least 6, and PA1 n is such a large number that the dye I contains 5 to 20% by weight of --COO.sup..crclbar. groups, are suitable in particular for producing recording fluids.
