Abstract
Actual thermodynamic processes occurring in a system such as a heat pump or refrigeration plant are made to approach theoretical ideal processes, e.g. an isothermal (T.sub.o), by use of a multistage gear machine as compressor and/or expander in the system, and conditioning, such as cooling, the system working fluid between successive stages in the machine. The individual stages of the gear machine each include a pair of meshing gears, preferably cylindrical spur gears of equal diameter and diminishing width from stage-to-stage.
