Abstract
An improved process for the preparation of 1,6-dibromo-2 -naphthol is disclosed. The improvement is accomplished by carrying out the reaction in an organic solvent at a temperature of from about 40.degree. to about 60.degree. C. in the presence of a catalytically-effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##STR1## where R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same or different and are alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl, naphthyl, substituted naphthyl heteroaryl, substituted heteroaryl or R.sub.1 taken together with R.sub.2 and the nitrogen atom form a heteroaryl or substituted heteroaryl group in which the heteroatom is nitrogen and X is an inorganic anion.
