Abstract
The present invention relates to herbicides comprising as an active ingredient a compound derived from a substance produced by a microorganism, which compound is represented by formula (I): ##STR1## wherein X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 are the same or different and each represent a hydrogen atom, a methyl group or a hydroxymethyl group, R represents a methyl group, a hydroxymethyl group or the following formula: ##STR2## wherein R' represents a carboxyl group, a hydroxymethyl group or an acetoxymethyl group. The herbicide of the present invention exhibits a strong weed-killing effect on a wide range of plants such as broad-leaved weeds as well as weeds belonging to the family Gramineae.
