Abstract

A process for preparing alkyl 2-alkyl-4-fluoromethylthiazolecarboxylates of the formula I ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is alkyl, PA1 R.sup.2 is difluoromethyl or trifluoromethyl and PA1 R.sup.3 is alkyl, by reacting thiocarboxamides of the formula II ##STR2## where R.sup.1 has the abovementioned meaning, with alkyl 2-chloro-4-fluoroacetoacetamides of the formula III ##STR3## where R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 have the abovementioned meanings, in an aprotic solvent at below 100.degree. C. and reacting with a dehydrating agent, in the presence of a base, at below 80.degree. C. is described.
