Abstract
The invention relates to a catalyst for the partial oxidation of methane or a gaseous mixture containing methane, said catalyst which preferably has a perovskite structure has the following composition: EQU Ln.sub.x A.sub.1-y B.sub.y O.sub.3 in which x is a number such that 0<x<10, y is a number such that 0<y<1, Ln is at least one element chosen from within the group formed by rare earths, strontium and bismuth and A and B are metals of groups IV b, V b, VI b and VIII of the periodic classification of elements.
