Abstract

A slide-bead coating technique utilizes a dual slide that includes an upper slide surface connected to a lower slide surface terminating at a coating lip. A substrate is transported on a coating roll past the coating lip so as to form a liquid bead at a coating location disposed between the coating lip and the substrate. The coating location is positioned more than ten degrees (10.degree.) but no more than fifty degrees (50.degree.) circumferentially below a horizontal centerplane passing through an axis of rotation of the coating roll. The lower slide surface forms an angle of between eighty-five degrees (85.degree.) and ninety-five degrees (95.degree.) with the plane tangent to the surface of the substrate at the coating location.
