Abstract

A shampoo formulation containing a polyglyceryl ester as the viscosity builder is disclosed. These polyglyceryl esters have the formula: EQU R.sup.5 OCH.sub.2 --CH(OR.sup.4)--CH.sub.2 --(O--CH.sub.2 CH(OR.sup.3)--CH.sub.2).sub.n --O--CH.sub.2 --CH(OR .sup.2)--CH.sub.2 OR.sup.1 wherein n is from 4 to 14 and one or more R groups is an acyl group containing from 8 to 22 carbon atoms and the remaining R groups are hydrogen. Such shampoos may be formulated to meet the criteria for both baby and adult shampoos without the need of using ethylene oxide derivatives. By tailoring the polyglyceryl ester employed, a pearlescent appearance can be created and characteristics such as viscosity and clarity may be affected.
