Abstract

A two-mode, compound-split, electro-mechanical transmission utilizing an input for receiving power from an engine. A power output is also utilized to deliver power to the drive wheels of the vehicle. First and second motor/generators are used in conjunction with an energy storage device for accepting power from, and supplying power to, the first and second motor/generators. A control mechanism regulates power flow among the energy storage device and the motor/generators as well as between the first and second motor/generators. A compound planetary gear set having first and second planetary gear sub-sets is incorporated in the transmission. Each of the planetary gear sub-sets has an inner gear member and an outer gear member, each of which meshingly engages a plurality of planet gear members. Mechanical arrangements are utilized operatively to connect: (1) the first motor/generator to at least one of the gear members in the compound planetary gear set; (2) the second motor/generator to at least one of the other of the gear members in the compound planetary gear set; (3) the input to at least one of the remaining gear members in the compound planetary gear set; and, (4) at least one …
