Abstract

An improved photographic element comprises a support bearing at least one silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith a pyrocatechol compound that functions as a scavenger for oxidized developing agent. The pyrocatechol compound has sufficient bulk that it is substantially non-diffusible in the photographic element and has in the four-position thereof a tertiary carbamoyl substituent. These scavenger compounds exhibit very high activity, have excellent stability upon long-term storage and do not leave colored residues after processing.
