Abstract

The invention relates to a paper white PDLC system which between 2 electrode layers contains a PDLC film comprising a liquid crystal mixture forming microdroplets in an optically isotropic, transparent polymer matrix, in which one of the refractive indices of the liquid crystal mixture is matched to the refractive index of the polymer matrix n.sub.M, the transmission of which can be varied by applying an electrical voltage characterized in that the PDLC film exhibits the following properties: PA1 .vertline.n-n.sub.M .vertline..gtoreq.0.05 wherein n is the mean refractive index of the liquid crystal mixture defined via PA1 n.sup.2 =1/3(m.sub.e.sup.2 +2n.sub.o.sup.2) PA1 mean droplet diameter.ltoreq.2 .mu.m PA1 thickness of PDLC film 5 .mu.m.ltoreq.d.ltoreq.75 .mu.m PA1 degree of backscatter.gtoreq.20%
