Abstract

Novel zirconium compounds of sulfonic acids are disclosed which have the following general formula: EQU [R(SO.sub.3).sub.x ].sub.y [R'(SO.sub.3).sub.x' ].sub.y' Zr[(O.sub.3 S).sub.x" R"].sub.y" [(O.sub.3 S).sub.x"' R'"].sub.y'" where R, R', R", R'" are independently substituted or unsubstituted, alkyl, alkylene, aryl or alkaryl radicals and x, x', x", x"', y, y', y" and y"' are sufficient in value to supply 4 sulfonate groups to the molecule, and the use of such zirconium compounds as catalysts in organic chemical reactions.
