Abstract

Environmentally improved, storage-stable detergent compositions, having good efficacy in terms of both primary and secondary detergency, contain a surfactant and an in situ, wash water-hydrolyzable polyimide biopolymer, such polyimide biopolymer having a COO.sup.- charge density ranging from 0 to 5.times.10.sup.-4 mol/g thereof and the at least partially biodegradable polypeptide detergent builder hydrolysate thereof having a COO.sup.- charge density of at least 10.sup.-3 mol/g thereof.
