Abstract

A method for controlling undesired plant growth and for regulating plant growth by allowing 4-methyl-5H-indeno[3,2-b]pyridines and 1-methyl-9H-indeno[2,3-c]pyridines of the general formula I ##STR1## where X, Y, Z and the radicals R.sup.1 to R.sup.5 have the meanings as described in the specification, to act on the plants, and novel 4-methyl-5H-indeno- [3,2-b]pyridines and herbicides and plant growth regulators containing these.
