Abstract

Electromechanical alkali metal cell with a positive electrode (6), which has a metal substrate (4) and an active mass (5) connected to the substrate, the active mass (5) containing a complex metal oxide with the general formula A.sub.x M.sub.y O.sub.z, in which A denotes the alkali metal, M a transition metal and O oxygen. With simple manufacture high long-term stability of such an electrode is achieved by the fact that the positive electrode (6) is a composite electrode, in which the active mass (5) is connected without an organic binder directly to the substrate (4), the active mass and its connection to the substrate being produced by heating an electrode base containing the transition metal M in contact with an inorganic compound of the alkali metal with conversion of a surface layer of the base with the alkali metal compound to the complex metal oxide (FIG. 4 ).
