Abstract

A self-scanning checkout apparatus for reading article information of articles to be purchased during a checkout operation carried out individually by a customer and for determining whether the check-out operation individually carried out by the customer is normal or abnormal. The self-scanning checkout apparatus includes a first holding section for holding articles to be purchased whose article information is not yet read; a reading device, operable individually by the customer, for reading article information of the articles to be purchased; a second holding section for holding articles to be purchased whose information has been read; a registering device for registering the article information read by the reading device; a passage detecting device, disposed between the first and second holding sections and in the vicinity of the reading device, for detecting passage of articles; and a weight variation detecting device, disposed on the second holding section and in the vicinity of the passage detecting device, for detecting a variation in the weight of articles held by the second holding section.
