Abstract
A process for racemization of an optically active 1-phenylethylamine derivative represented by formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents a phenyl group substituted at least at the ortho-position, which comprises reacting the optically active 1-phenylethylamine derivative (1) with an aldehyde compound represented by formula (2): EQU R.sup.2 --CHO (2) where R.sup.2 represents an optionally substituted alkyl group or an optionally substituted phenyl group to form an optically active imine represented by formula (3): ##STR2## reacting the imine with an alkaline metal tert-alkoxide in an aprotic solvent, and then hydrolyzing the resultant racemic imine.
