Abstract

A liquid crystal display device including a first substrate supporting a plurality of pixels, each having an electrode, a second substrate having an electrode and arranged such that the electrode of the first substrate opposes the electrode of the second substrate, a nematic liquid crystal composition layer held between the first and second substrates, and aligning films for aligning liquid crystal molecules of the nematic liquid crystal composition in one direction on surfaces of the first and second substrates, wherein the electrode of the first substrate in each pixel includes a plurality of conductive layers each having a width of 50 .mu.m or less, and a distance between the conductive layers being 50 .mu.m or less, and at least two of the plurality of conductive layers being electrically connected in at least part of an area in the pixel, the electrode of the second substrate consists of a continuous conductive film, and a distance RS between the conductive layers and a distance D between the electrode of the first substrate and the electrode of the second substrate satisfy the following inequality. EQU tan (.pi./9).ltoreq.RS/2D.ltoreq.tan (7.pi./18)
