Abstract

A process for the preparation of C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl esters of (meth)acrylic acid from esters of the formula I ##STR1## and in case from esters of the formula (II) ##STR2## where R.sup.1 is hydrogen or --CH.sub.3, PA1 R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, and PA1 n is an integer >0, in the liquid phase and in the presence of an acid at reduced pressure and with continuous removal of the cleavage products.
