Abstract
The subject invention provides methods for preventing, retarding, or reducing atherosclerotic lesions or atherosclerotic degradation of aterial walls or treating atherosclerosis comprising administering to a mammal in need of such prevention, retardation, reduction or treatment at least one compound having the formula I: ##STR1## wherein: Ph is phenyl, PA1 Ar is: 2-nitrophenyl, 3-nitrophenyl, 2,3-dichlorophenyl or benzofurazan-4-yl, PA1 A is a branched chain alkylene radical having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, PA1 R is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, optionally mono-substituted by an alkoxy substituent having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, PA1 R.sub.1 is hydrogen, hydroxy, or an alkyl radical having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, PA1 R.sub.2 is hydrogen, or methyl; or an enantiomer of a compound having formula I; a hydrated compound having formula I; a solvated compound having formula I; a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt, or any of the foregoing.
