Abstract

Liquid-crystalline compounds of the formula I EQU X(--Y--A--Y--M--Y--B).sub.n I, where PA1 X is an aromatic or aliphatic ring system, PA1 n is an integer from 2 to 6, PA1 each Y, independently of the others, is a direct bond, --COO--, --OCO--, --O--, --CONH-- or --CON(R)--, where R is C.sub.1 -- to C.sub.4 -alkyl, PA1 A is a spacer, PA1 M is a mesogenic group and PA1 B is a side chain, are particularly suitable for use in displays or for the production of light-reflecting coatings.
