Abstract

A process for preparing .gamma.,.delta.-unsaturated ketones by PA0 a) reacting vinylcarbinols or propargyl alcohols with alkyl acetoacetates or diketene and PA0 b) thermally rearranging the resulting acetoacetates in the presence or absence of an aluminum catalyst to .gamma.,.delta.-unsaturated ketones (Carroll reaction), wherein step a) and/or step b) is carried out in a cyclic carbonate of the formula I or a .gamma.-lactone of the formula II ##STR1## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are H, or lower alkyl and R.sup.4 is H, lower alkyl, phenyl or methoxymethyl, as solvent.
