Abstract
This invention relates to a sintered silicon nitride ceramic material comprising: PA1 a) at least 80 wt % silicon nitride grains, and PA1 b) between 0.1 and 5 wt % additive grains characterized by at least one of: PA1 i)a Knoop hardness of at least 25 GPa, PA1 ii) a coefficient of thermal expansion of at least 6.times.10.sup.-6 /K, and PA1 iii) a modulus of elasticity of at least 600 GPa, wherein the maximum detectable grain size of the additive grains is no more than 4 um, as determined by a photomicrograph of a polished 75 mm.sup.2 microstructure of the silicon nitride material.
