Abstract

Disclosed are dyes having the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy or chlorine, PA1 R.sub.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, PA1 R.sub.3 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, PA1 R.sub.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, PA1 R.sub.5 is hydroxyethyl or hydroxypropyl, and PA1 An.sup..crclbar. is an anion, in which R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are not both ethyl at the same time, compositions containing the dyes and methods of using and preparing the dyes. The dyes are especially useful for dyeing polyacrylonitrile.
