The invention relates to a steel for foundry roll shells comprising (in % by weight) PA0 0.1 to 0.4% carbon PA0 0.1 to 0.8% silicon PA0 0.2 to 0.7% manganese PA0 2.0 to 2.9% chromium PA0 0.2 to 0.9% nickel PA0 0.5 to 1.2% molybdenum PA0 0.3 to 0.7% vanadium PA0 0.15 to 0.3% columbium PA0 0.10 to 0.3% nitrogen PA0 balance iron and incidental impurities.
