Abstract

A nematic liquid crystal mixture having a birefringence .increment.n of at least 0.20, comprising at least one fluorinated terphenyl of formula I and at least one fluorinated terphenyl of formula II ##STR1## wherein R and R' are each independently of one another or alkyl of up to 12 C atoms, optionally substituted by halogen, CH.sub.2 group optionally replaced, in each case independently of one another, by --O--, ##STR2## in such a manner that oxygen atoms are not linked directly to one another, PA1 X and X.sup.1 are each independently F, Cl, CF.sub.3, OCF.sub.3 or OCHF.sub.2, and PA1 L.sup.1 -L.sup.4 are each independently H or F.
