Abstract
A magnetooptical recording medium has a stack of layers and is capable of being overwritten by light modulation. The recording medium has a writing layer in which information bits can be written, and a bias layer which generates a leaky magnetic field for writing information bits in the writing layer. The bias layer has a Curie temperature that is in the range of from (T.sub.2 -90.degree. C.) to (T.sub.2 +5.degree. C.), where T.sub.2 is the Curie temperature of the writing layer, and the bias layer has a saturation magnetization at ambient temperature that is at least 350 emu/cc.
