Abstract

A method is for determining the number of cells in cell culture is provided. In practicing the method, the cells are lysed and incubated at about 18.degree. C. to 25.degree. C. at acid pH with a benzothiazole substrate for a sufficient time to generate detectable fluorescence that is proportional to cell number, and then measuring fluorescence. The method is highly sensitive and can detect small differences or changes in cell number. Thus, the method can be used in drug screening assays. An automated high throughput screening assay for identifying compounds that modulate angiogenesis using the method is also provided.
