Abstract

A pharmaceutical composition comprising an ultrasonicated formulation of .alpha.-lipoic acid and an aqueous solution which may also contain other antioxidants and/or metal chelators is disclosed. Also disclosed is a method of ultrasonically preparing pure or mixed micelles of lipid-soluble antioxidants and .alpha.-lipoic acid in aqueous solutions for intravenous delivery to mitigate microvascular dysfunction in hemorrhagic shock and other conditions of acute microvascular injury.
