Abstract

In a process for preparing 3-cyano-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexanone by reacting isophorone with hydrogen cyanide at from 80 to 220.degree. C. in the presence of a catalyst, the reaction is carried out in the presence of the betaine 1,3-dimethylimidazolium-4-carboxylate.
