Abstract
A liquid crystal display device comprises, a pair of substrates having an electrode on a surface thereof, and a liquid crystal layer containing a liquid crystal and a dichroic dye, wherein the dichroic dye is an anthraquinone dye exhibiting 0.08 or less of Y value represented by the following equation, EQU Y={.SIGMA..DELTA.H tr,m/268-.SIGMA..DELTA.S tr,m}(kJK.sup.-1 kg.sup.-1) wherein .SIGMA..DELTA.H tr,m is a sum of an enthalpy change of transition from -5.degree. C. to the melting point of and an enthalpy change of melting per unit weight, and .SIGMA..DELTA.S tr,m is a sum of an entropy change of transition from -5.degree. C. to the melting point and an entropy change of melting per unit weight.
