Abstract

A system for reading from and writing on rotatable information media includes embedded reference tracks whose edges are used for precise information track positioning and also for precise laser source positioning. The nature of the returned signal is such that it can be used for monitoring the aging characteristics of the laser light source. Maximum and minimum values are gathered over time and stored in any convenient non-volatile storage device, even the disk itself.
