Austenitic stainless steel having a very low nickel content, of the following composition by weight: PA1 Carbon<0.1% PA1 0.1%<silicon<1% PA1 5%<manganese<9% PA1 0.1%<nickel<2% PA1 13%<chromium<19% PA1 1%<copper<4% PA1 0.1%<nitrogen<0.40% PA1 5.times.10.sup.-4 %<boron<50.times.10.sup.-4 % PA1 phosphorus<0.05% PA1 sulfur<0.01%.
