Abstract

The invention is a method of producing a viscose solution by ______________________________________ a) irradiating .alpha.-cellulose with ionizing particles, b) mercerizing the irradiated .alpha.-cellulose with alkali, c) xanthating the irradiated mercerized .alpha.-cellulose with an amount less than 28% of carbon disulfide based on the weight of .alpha.-cellulose, and d) dissolving the xanthated .alpha.-cellulose in an aqueous alkali solution; ______________________________________ and adding at least one surfactant before or after one or more steps of the method. The surfactant is chosen from the group consisting of a water soluble nonionic and a cationic surfactant, and it is added to the process in an amount of 0.02-5% by weight of the amount of .alpha.-cellulose. The viscose solution has suitable properties for the production of regenerated cellulose fibers.
