Abstract

Hexacoordinated ruthenium and osmium catalysts of the formulae ##STR1## in which M and M' independently of one another are ruthenium or osmium; PA1 X, X', Y and Y' independently of one another are anionic ligands, or X and Y and X' and Y' in each case together are bis-anionic ligands PA1 L.sup.1 and L.sup.1' independently of one another are tertiary phosphine; PA1 L.sup.2 and L.sup.3 independently of one another are a monodentate ligand, or L.sup.2 and L.sup.3 together are bidentate, neutral electron donor ligands; PA1 L.sup.4 is tetradentate, neutral electron donor ligand; PA1 L.sup.5 is a bidentate, neutral electron donor ligand; and PA1 T and T' indepedently of one another are H or organic substituents, are useful for the synthesis of custom-tailored polymers and for the ring-closing metathesis of olefins.
