Abstract
An optical module comprises a semiconductor light-emitting device having a near-field pattern elongated in a transverse direction, and an optical fiber having a light incident face which converges light intensity distribution along a longitudinal direction more than that along the transverse direction. Preferably, the semiconductor light-emitting device is a semiconductor laser. Emitted light having a transversely elongated near-field pattern would have a longitudinally elongated far-field pattern. As the optical fiber converges the light intensity distribution along the longitudinal direction more than that along the transverse direction, the light incident thereon can be converged into its core at a high coupling efficiency.
